FAQs

The Different Levels of Care for Mental Health Treatment

What is inpatient treatment?

Inpatient mental health treatment provides intensive, structured care in a hospital or specialized psychiatric facility. This level of care is designed for individuals who require 24-hour monitoring and support due to severe mental health conditions, acute crises, or safety concerns.

Pasadena Villa does not offer inpatient treatment.

Residential mental health treatment is a structured, live-in program that provides intensive, longer-term support for adults navigating significant mental health challenges. Unlike inpatient treatment — which is typically short-term and focused on crisis stabilization — residential treatment emphasizes voluntary, ongoing care in a less restrictive environment focused on recovery and real-world skill building.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured, intensive mental health treatment program that provides comprehensive daytime care — typically five days a week — allowing individuals to return home or to a supportive living environment each evening.

A PHP with housing provides structured, intensive daytime treatment — typically five days a week — along with a safe, supportive living environment near the treatment facility for individuals who need additional stability during care.

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a structured mental health treatment program designed for individuals who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy. IOP typically offers day and evening scheduling options, totaling 9-12 hours of programming per week.

Traditional outpatient therapy is a flexible level of care in which individuals receive mental health services — such as individual or group therapy — while continuing to live at home and maintain daily routines. It’s best suited for those with mild to moderate mental health conditions or those stepping down from more intensive levels of care.
