Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive processing therapy is an evidence-based therapy that helps shift negative thoughts connected to traumatic experiences, supporting meaningful relief and long-term recovery.
Cognitive processing therapy at Pasadena Villa
At Pasadena Villa, cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is an integral part of our trauma-informed mental health treatment. Designed for individuals experiencing trauma-related symptoms — such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — CPT provides a structured, evidence-based framework to help reduce psychological distress and restore emotional stability.
Through CPT, participants learn to:
- Identify and challenge unhelpful beliefs shaped by trauma
- Alleviate persistent feelings of shame, guilt, fear, or self-blame
- Develop healthier thought patterns and improve emotional regulation
- Rebuild a sense of safety, trust, and self-worth
- Strengthen interpersonal relationships and improve day-to-day functioning
What is CPT?
CPT is a structured, evidence-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps individuals understand how traumatic experiences can shape thoughts, beliefs, and emotional responses.
In CPT, clients learn to identify trauma-related “stuck points” — rigid or unhelpful beliefs that may develop after a traumatic experience — and practice cognitive skills to reframe those beliefs with more balanced, supportive perspectives.
Originally developed to treat PTSD, CPT is also effective for addressing a wide range of trauma-related concerns, including symptoms that overlap with anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges.
Healing through CPT
CPT empowers individuals to reframe trauma-related beliefs, reducing emotional distress and supporting lasting recovery.
How does CPT work?
CPT is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach that helps individuals understand — and shift — the way trauma influences their present-day thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. With the support of a trained therapist, clients engage in structured exercises to challenge distressing beliefs, strengthen emotional regulation, and apply new tools in everyday life.
Rather than changing the past, CPT focuses on how the experience is interpreted today. By challenging unhelpful thoughts and developing more balanced perspectives, individuals gain tools to navigate daily life with greater clarity, confidence, and resilience.
